Buried deep beneath the ocean lies one of the world’s top wreck dives, and its right on the Burdekin’s door step.

Long stretches of sand and luminous waters provide the ideal swimming spot at Alva Beach, just 15 minute’s drive from Ayr.

This event is held in May every year and attracts a crowd of 3000 – 4000 patrons. There is a lot of giveaways and fun for everyone at this annual community event.

The Burdekin Dam is the largest dam in the state. It has a catchment area of about 130,000 km sq and holds about 1.8 million mega litres of water at full capacity. That’s roughly four times the amount of water in Sydney Harbour.

Fishing enthusiasts are spolit for choice when it comes to the Burdekin. The extensive delta system means estuary fishing is most popular,but beach fishing is also enjoyed by tourists and locals alike.The Burdekin is most notably home to one of the best fighting and eating fish in the world –the Barramundi.

The Burdekin Bridge connects the two towns of Ayr & Home Hill across the mighty Burdekin, one of Australia’s most important rivers.The bridge known as the “Silver Link” measures an impressive 1103 meters making it longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge & Brisbane’s Story Bridge.

The Ayr Golf Club is home to Australia’s best ever golfer Karrie Webb. The 18 hole layout is a challenge to golfers of all handicaps. There are competition games on throughout the year, and the clubhouse facilities will surprise you. Motor buggies are available for hire.
